I’M INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING FOR CASA—HOW CAN I HELP?
Become an Advocate
A judge appoints a CASA advocate to represent the best interests of an abused or neglected child in court proceedings. A CASA advocate attends 30 hours of training and 3 hours of court observation before he or she can become a child’s advocate in court. Once trained, volunteer advocates are assigned to monitor a child's case through its duration resulting from a formal court order. Generally advocates are asked to make an 18-month commitment to the program. As an advocate, you are responsible for visiting your child on a monthly basis. You will also review records, research information and talk to the foster parents, case workers, teachers and others involved in the child’s case. Utilizing this information, the advocate then writes a report and submits it to the Judge. The Judge uses the report to help her or him make decisions about the child's placement and treatment needs. There are no formal experience requirements; however, the following qualities are especially helpful:
· emotional maturity, with good judgment and common sense · objectivity and flexibility · self-assurance and assertiveness · can utilize critical thinking & non-judgmental approaches · ability to keep information confidential · able to work within established court and agency guidelines · good listening, interviewing and observation skills · able to write clearly and concisely Click here to find out how to become an Advocate.
